Zeeland-Flanders was part of the County of Flanders until 1600. It was subsequently ruled by the States General of the Dutch Republic until 1795. In July 1814, Zeeland-Flanders became part of the province of Zeeland. The former islands of Terneuzen, Zaamslag and Axel were now controlled by Middelburg. This gave the region its Calvinist.

The province comprises Zeeuwsch-Vlaanderen, a strip of the Flanders mainland between the Westerschelde (Western Scheldt) and Belgium, plus six former islands: Schouwen en Duiveland, Tholen, Noord-Beveland, Walcheren, Zuid-Beveland, and Sint Philipsland.
