The bottom line is that Kaito Momota is a pretty great character starting out, but he's just too poorly handled going forward. The writers loved him so much that they spoiled him with their love, and in the end he never got that innovative and creative character arc he was destined for. The whole shtick with chapter 4 really ticked me off.

People are just exaggerating how Kaito is. Kaito is still the same guy. He still pulls Shuichi it of sadness. It's just that some of his dialogue in the Japanese version has more emphasis on his overly-traditional views thanks to how he was raised by his grandparents like Chapter 2 shows.

Among other things, Kaito Momota is used to deliver a certain portrayal of toxic masculinity in Japan, which does include the bigotry associated with it.
